Executive Summary
YEESA at a glance
Youth Enterprise Empowerment SA (YEESA) is a Soweto-based South African nonprofit company built to help township and rural youth-led micro-enterprises move from survival trading into stable, investable businesses. We do this through the Startup Launchpad programme, mentorship circles, investment-readiness support, and paid external workshops that create earned income while expanding impact across Gauteng.
Founded and led by Startup Launchpad, our executive director with 8 years of experience in SME development and township business support, YEESA is governed as a Nonprofit Company (NPC) with PBO/NPO registration in progress. In Year, our finance and compliance manager, a qualified accountant with a BCom in Accounting and 10 years of experience in donor-funded NGO finance, anchors reporting discipline, cash control, and compliance.
- Headquarters: Soweto, Johannesburg
- Primary market: Youth entrepreneurs aged 18–35 in Gauteng townships and peri-urban areas
- Core offer: 6-month business development, mentorship, and seed-funding readiness support
- Year 1 revenue: ZAR 1,920,000
- Break-even timing: Approximately Month 24
- Year 5 revenue target: ZAR 4,553,762
YEESA exists because too many young founders have viable ideas but no access to structured support, networks, or capital. That gap keeps good businesses trapped in informal, low-margin activity instead of becoming employers and local economic contributors.
The market opportunity we are targeting
We serve township and rural entrepreneurs in Gauteng who are already trading, but who need practical skills, coaching, and access to funding pathways to grow. The demand is immediate and measurable because thousands of young people are already attempting self-employment in food, retail, services, and digital micro-businesses without the systems needed to scale.
YEESA is positioned in a market segment where support is highly fragmented. Public and private programmes exist, but many are centralised, theory-heavy, or difficult for township entrepreneurs to access consistently.
:::reassure Why this model is commercially credible
- We are embedded in the market we serve, not observing it from a distance.
- We combine training, mentorship, and market access in one delivery pathway.
- We earn revenue from both sponsored programmes and paid workshops.
- We have a clear progression from launch loss to positive operating performance.
:::
Our five-year forecast shows a practical growth path. Revenue rises from ZAR 1,920,000 in Year 1 to ZAR 2,631,168 in Year 2, ZAR 3,288,960 in Year 3, ZAR 3,946,752 in Year 4, and ZAR 4,553,762 in Year 5. That growth is driven by increasing cohort utilisation, repeat workshop demand, and stronger corporate and donor relationships.
What YEESA does and how we generate revenue
Our flagship Startup Launchpad programme is a 6-month cohort-based intervention for entrepreneurs who need help with cash flow, pricing, record-keeping, customer acquisition, and investment readiness. We deliver practical business support in ways that fit the realities of township trading, including evening and weekend sessions.
We also sell external paid workshops and consulting services to NGOs, incubators, and partner organisations that want township-focused entrepreneurship delivery. This second line strengthens cash flow, diversifies income, and reduces dependence on grant cycles.
YEESA’s revenue model is intentionally balanced. In Year 1, Startup Launchpad programme fees contribute ZAR 1,200,000, while external paid workshops and consulting services contribute ZAR 720,000. That gives us a total of ZAR 1,920,000 in Year 1 revenue with a 67.0% gross margin across the model.
Leadership and execution strength
YEESA is led by Startup Launchpad, who brings the strategy, partnership development, and operational oversight needed to keep the organisation focused on delivery. The business is supported by In Year on finance, compliance, and reporting, which protects the organisation’s funding credibility and cash discipline.
The broader team adds depth where it matters most. Thandi Mokoena, our Programme Manager, holds a BA in Development Studies and has 7 years of experience running youth skills programmes and incubators in Soweto and Tembisa. Bongani Sithole, our Outreach and Partnerships Coordinator, brings grassroots access through his business background and relationships with community leaders, schools, and churches.
:::tip What makes the team investable
The team combines three critical capabilities:
- Programme delivery
- Financial control
- Community access
That mix allows YEESA to recruit, retain, and support entrepreneurs while maintaining the reporting standards expected by investors, lenders, and finance partners.
:::
Funding ask and capital structure
YEESA is seeking ZAR 1,300,000 in launch and growth capital, structured as ZAR 300,000 in equity capital and ZAR 1,000,000 in debt principal at 12.5% over 5 years. This capital gives us the runway to execute the programme properly, absorb the early ramp-up period, and protect delivery quality while revenue scales.
The broader first-18-month funding requirement is ZAR 1,800,000, which includes startup setup, initial operating cover, and working capital for facilitator fees, stipends, and programme expansion. We have aligned the capital plan to a realistic ramp period rather than assuming immediate full utilisation.
Headline financial performance
YEESA is forecast to record Year 1 revenue of ZAR 1,920,000 and net income of -ZAR 161,600 as startup investment and early-stage operating pressure are absorbed. The model turns positive in Year 2, with net income of ZAR 174,355, then strengthens to ZAR 434,671 in Year 3 and ZAR 910,838 by Year 5.
We reach annual break-even revenue of ZAR 2,161,194, with break-even timing at approximately Month 24. That timing is realistic for a nonprofit launch model that is building cohort volume, workshop demand, and partner confidence in parallel.
Financial signals that matter most
- Gross margin: 67.0%
- Year 1 EBITDA: ZAR 23,400
- Year 3 EBITDA: ZAR 730,440
- Year 5 EBITDA: ZAR 1,332,723
- Year 5 closing cash: ZAR 2,119,191
- Year 5 DSCR: 5.92
YEESA is not a theoretical social programme. It is a disciplined, revenue-backed nonprofit enterprise development platform built for South African township realities, with clear economics, named leadership, and a credible path to scale across Gauteng and beyond.
Company Description
Our Identity and Legal Structure
Youth Enterprise Empowerment SA (YEESA) is a South African nonprofit company based in Soweto, Johannesburg, and built to serve township and rural youth entrepreneurs across Gauteng. We operate as a Nonprofit Company (NPC) under the Companies Act, with PBO/NPO registration in progress so we can issue Section 18A certificates once approved.
YEESA was founded to solve a practical gap in youth enterprise development. Too many young people in township and peri-urban communities have viable business ideas but no access to structured training, business networks, or seed capital, which leaves them trapped in low-margin informal trading. We exist to move those entrepreneurs from survival activity into stable micro-enterprises that can create income, jobs, and local economic activity.
Our business model is nonprofit in purpose and commercial in discipline. We do not pursue private distribution of profit, and all surpluses are retained for programme delivery, community reach, and operational stability. The organisation is governed by a board, and I serve as the founding director and operational head with full responsibility for strategy, partnerships, and execution.
Founding Purpose and Mission
YEESA was founded to make business support practical, accessible, and grounded in township realities. We work with young entrepreneurs aged 18–35 who already have energy, ideas, and early trading activity, but who are held back by gaps in training, access to markets, and start-up funding.
Our mission is to equip township and rural youth-led micro-enterprises with the skills, mentorship, and capital readiness they need to become sustainable businesses. We focus on real-world capability, not theory alone, because our target group needs immediate tools that improve cash flow, customer acquisition, pricing, operations, and financial discipline.
Our mission is to help youth-led micro-enterprises in Gauteng become investable, sustainable, and job creating.
The long-term social outcome is broader than enterprise support. When one small business becomes stable, it improves household income, creates local work, and keeps spending within the community. That is the economic change YEESA is designed to produce.
What YEESA Does
YEESA runs structured business development programmes, mentorship circles, and investment-readiness support for township and rural youth-led enterprises. Our flagship intervention is the Startup Launchpad programme, which combines practical training, guided implementation, and ongoing support for early-stage entrepreneurs.
We serve businesses in sectors where young people already trade and where survival activity can be converted into organised enterprise, including:
- food and catering
- retail and informal trade
- personal and professional services
- digital and online micro-businesses
- small product-based ventures
Our model is designed around the day-to-day reality of entrepreneurs who cannot attend rigid, office-hour programmes in central business districts. We run sessions in formats that are accessible, practical, and aligned to how township entrepreneurs actually work.
Core programme features
- Business skills training focused on cash flow, pricing, record-keeping, customer service, and operations
- Mentorship circles led by practitioners who understand local market conditions
- Investment-readiness support to help entrepreneurs become fundable and partner-ready
- Seed funding support guidance to prepare beneficiaries for grants, loans, and CSI-linked opportunities
- Market access assistance through partner introductions and local visibility
We also provide external paid workshops and consulting services to NGOs, incubators, and partner organisations that want entrepreneurship training delivered in township contexts. This additional line strengthens the organisation’s financial resilience and expands YEESA’s reach beyond direct beneficiary cohorts.
Location and Geographic Reach
YEESA is headquartered in Soweto, Johannesburg, which places us inside one of the country’s most recognisable township enterprise ecosystems. That location is strategic because it gives us direct access to entrepreneurs, community networks, transport routes, schools, churches, and local support institutions.
Our current operational base is Gauteng, with a clear plan to extend to other provinces through a hub-and-spoke model. This allows us to deepen impact in priority communities while scaling through local delivery partners and facilitator networks.
Why Soweto matters to our model
- It is close to our core beneficiary market
- It provides visibility and credibility in township communities
- It supports evening and weekend programme delivery
- It reduces the friction that often prevents youth from accessing formal enterprise support
We are not building a remote or centralised intervention. YEESA is embedded where our beneficiaries live, trade, and build businesses.
Ownership and Governance
YEESA is led by me as the founding director and operational head. I bring 8 years of experience in SME development and have worked on township business support projects with local municipalities and corporates. My role is to set strategic direction, lead partner development, oversee delivery quality, and ensure the organisation remains aligned with its social mission and funding obligations.
The leadership team strengthens delivery and governance across finance, programming, and outreach.
- Palesa Zulu, our Finance and Compliance Manager, is a qualified accountant with a BCom in Accounting and 10 years of experience managing donor-funded projects and audits for NGOs in Johannesburg.
- Thandi Mokoena, our Programme Manager, holds a BA in Development Studies and has 7 years of experience running youth skills programmes and incubators in Soweto and Tembisa.
- Bongani Sithole, our Outreach and Partnerships Coordinator, brings direct entrepreneurial experience from his own small logistics business and strong relationships with community leaders, schools, and churches.
Our governance structure is intentionally lean. That keeps decision-making fast while still providing the financial control, programme discipline, and relationship management required by funders and impact partners.
:::reassure Why Investors and Finance Partners Back YEESA
YEESA is positioned to be credible because our operating model is simple, scalable, and rooted in visible community demand.
- We serve a clearly defined youth enterprise segment in Gauteng
- We combine training, mentorship, and market access in one delivery model
- We have a hybrid income structure that reduces grant dependence
- We are led by a team with direct experience in SME development, accounting, youth programming, and grassroots mobilisation

Our Strategic Positioning
YEESA is differentiated by proximity, practicality, and relevance. Many youth enterprise programmes are centralised, theory-heavy, or expensive to access, which creates a gap for township entrepreneurs who need support that fits their environment. We solve that gap by operating in the community, using local schedules, and focusing on immediate business outcomes.
Our target beneficiaries are young people who are already trying to earn income but need help turning informal activity into sustainable enterprise. We are especially focused on entrepreneurs who have:
- matric or some tertiary education
- limited access to finance
- limited access to formal business networks
- viable ideas but no structured support
- a strong need for mentorship and implementation guidance
That positioning matters because it allows YEESA to support both the individual entrepreneur and the local economy around them. As our beneficiaries grow, they buy more locally, hire locally, and begin to participate more effectively in formal market channels.
Legal and Operational Readiness
YEESA is structured to be fundable, accountable, and scalable. Our NPC status provides the legal foundation for public-benefit work, while our PBO/NPO process supports future tax-deductible funding arrangements through Section 18A certification.
We are building the organisation with strong internal controls from the start. That includes board oversight, compliant financial management, programme monitoring, and formal reporting for donors, lenders, and impact investors.
Our company description is therefore not a statement of intent alone. YEESA is a registered, Gauteng-based nonprofit enterprise development organisation with a defined beneficiary market, a practical service model, named leadership, and a clear path to scale across South Africa.
